Concert musicologically irresponsible

For more than 20 years now Doulce Mémoire has been studying the wind instruments of the Renaissance period and has built up over that time an instrumentarium that regularly gives rise to questions from audiences: How do they work? What are they called? Why are they bent? What sort of wood are they made from? Where do you find such instruments? Why do you puff out your cheeks when you play? And so on. So the ensemble decided to devote a new programme to its instruments, in which to tell their story.

Flutes, recorders, dulcians, crumhorn, shawms, serpent, flageolet, diatonic accordion and percussion instruments take part in playing all sorts of different pieces: a rag, a Vivaldi concerto, a Cuban song, a Baroque dance for a canary, a modern piece (of the Star Wars type), birdsongs, a pink panther, El castigador (Cuban son), a spagna of the Quattrocento, O Virgo splendens of the Trecento, Gypsy music, an ornithological duo, Renaissance dances, a Renaissance tune turned into a valse musette, a solo for the Iranian zarb… in short, a riot of joyous music!
