A colourful picture of music in Europe at the time of the Spanish Siglo d’Oro. Musics of Antonio de Cabezón (1510 – 1566)

Antonio de Cabezón, organist of the Spanish Royal Chapel, followed Philip II in his official travels to France, Italy, the Netherlands and England.

The Canciones glosadas y motetes of 1578 presents the songs and madrigals that were in vogue in Europe at that time, which he subsequently ornamented with virtuosity for his instrument, the organ.

Doulce Mémoire presents instrumental versions of the pieces Cabezón wrote for the keyboard (although they are intabulated). The typically Spanish hauts (loud) instruments of the ministriles – bajones (bassoons), chirimías (shawms) and flutes – and the bas (soft) instruments – spinet and harp – bring colour and variety like the organ stops, while singing enables us to compare these pieces with the vocal models that Cabezón used for his diminutions.
